Wicklow People of the Year Award 2002

I was fortunate enough to be given the contract for the Rehab Wicklow People of the Year Award. I design the awards around the concept of a flame.

The Flame is representative of all that is positive.  It gives warmth, light and is symbolic of the very essence of life. The eternal flame both commemorates the achievements of those who have come before, and celebrates the endeavour and leadership of those to whom we honour with this emblem of light.

The wood chosen for the award is yew.  A tree that can live for up to five thousands years. Demonstrating the steadfastness and strength of endurance.  The golden red of the heart wood is emblematic of the warmth of the recipients of these awards.

The twist and turns of the design demonstrate that endeavour is not a straight road, whilst the overall pyramidal shape reveals that leadership rises from the community, and in doing so draws together the myriad strands that make up a community.

The Celtic knot work on the base is symbolic of the virtues of continuity and commitment, the foundations of endeavour.

The main award

One of the individual awards.
Although each individual award was representative of the flame. Each award was carved with a slight difference in recongition of the individual endeavour of each person.
